My Lyric Contest [Sep. 5th, 2004|03:50 pm]
As many of you know, I ran a contest in my AIM profile where contestants had to name the title and artist of a song, based off of the lyrics. Since I've formatted, I lost the standings so I figured I'd start over, declaring Katie the winner. As an experiment, I made a LJ for it:

So stop by and play. It'll be exciting! Woo!

First day of school! [Aug. 23rd, 2004|07:16 am]
All my classes seem to be interesting so that's a plus. of course that's just from looking at descriptions again, so I really won't know until the end of the day. Oh, any of the clique that happens to read this before going to school should meet in the cellar for lunch. It shouldnt be too busy and we'll be able to find each other.

Chuckie you're not invited. So there.

Apartment-z0r [Aug. 9th, 2004|08:14 pm]
I signed for my apartment at Rillito Village on Sunday. The 1BD apartment that I want is currently occupied and the guy should be moving out on the 15th, though his lease goes through the 20th. The original plan involved me moving into a studio for the timeperiod until he was out, but I figured that combining the shittiness of moving all my stuff twice with the shittiness of a studio apartment would be less than wonderful. The current plan (beyond prayer that I can move in before school starts) is to live at the house until I can move into my shiny nice apartment. Anyway, once the fucker living in my apartment is totally gone, the maintenance-ninjas swoop in, repainting, cleaning, de-odorizing, etc, and leave me with a shiny clean apartment as soon as possible. There were no maintenance-ninjas, or even maintenance-too-weak-to-stand-chemo-patients, at my old place, so they should be a welcome change. The floorplan is cool and pretty good sized. I'm supposed to get a call when I can move in, but I fear that it's going to be either around the time when Mike and Maria can (i.e. moments before school starts) or a few days afterward, depending on the speed of the cleaning crew. Sorry for not providing the new party place during the downtime of Mike and Maria's, but at least now I won't be living in a horrible shithole where we wouldn't dare to gather.

Here's some other pics I stole. Thanks Google.

Yay for Kerry [Jul. 30th, 2004|08:08 pm]
Granted, I would have voted for a half-trained chimp over Bush in the upcoming election, but having watched the final DNC speech, it looks like I might actually not just be voting against Bush, but for Kerry.

Of the many things that bug me about our fearless leader, his inability to see past what he feels this "Jesus" fellow would want him to be doing is one of the biggies. "Of course I'll support a ban on gay marriage! Jesus hates fags!" Enter Kerry:

And let me say it plainly: in that cause, and in this campaign, we welcome people of faith. America is not us and them. I think of what Ron Reagan said of his father a few weeks ago, and I want to say this to you tonight: I don't wear my own faith on my sleeve. But faith has given me values and hope to live by, from Vietnam to this day, from Sunday to Sunday. I don't want to claim that God is on our side. As Abraham Lincoln told us, I want to pray humbly that we are on God's side. And whatever our faith, one belief should bind us all: The measure of our character is our willingness to give of ourselves for others and for our country.

Rock the fuck on. That's exactly what I want my public figures doing. You believe in your God, I'll believe in mine (or not, if I so choose) and neither of us tries to force the other one to convert. Damn straight, Kerry.

So much promise stretches before us. Americans have always reached for the impossible, looked to the next horizon, and asked: What if?

Two young bicycle mechanics from Dayton asked what if this airplane could take off at Kitty Hawk? It did that and changed the world forever. A young president asked what if we could go to the moon in ten years? And now we're exploring the solar system and the stars themselves. A young generation of entrepreneurs asked, what if we could take all the information in a library and put it on a little chip the size of a fingernail? We did and that too changed the world forever.

And now it's our time to ask: What if?

What if we find a breakthrough to cure Parkinson's, diabetes, Alzheimer's and AIDS? What if we have a president who believes in science, so we can unleash the wonders of discovery like stem cell research to treat illness and save millions of lives?

But wait, doesn't Jesus tell you not to use stem cells to cure disease and enrich the lives of those around you? Oh, my bad... Jesus was all about the helping. Now I remember. Bush tends to leave that part out when he's passing on the word of his God.

So basically, within a few minutes in one speech, Kerry confronted two of my big issues with the idiot currently in office, and gave damn near exactly the answers I would have if I were in President. This makes me happy.

America can do better. And help is on the way.

SA Strikes Again [Jul. 13th, 2004|10:15 pm]
My cousins, Max, Sam, and Alice are in town, and are 17, 16, and 14 respectively. I think. Anyway, point is that in talking to them tonight, Sam uttered the phrase, "You, sir, win the internet." I countered with, "I take it from that statement that you guys are Something Awful forum goons?"

Turns out that they are not members, but they lurk when it's open and read the frontpage avidly. Max is currently working on his Cisco Certification at his HS (...did I ever tell you about how I wired the Cisco lab but didn't get certified for it?) and so is appropriately nerdy. Sam tends to follow Max's nerdy lead but he's also occasionally "active" so you know how those people are. Alice has a very similar sense of humor too. It's weird seeing them as real people instead of just little kids like in my memory. Max reads 8-bit theatre, PA, Ctrl-Alt-Del, and several other webcomics that I did/do, so obviously nerdiness is hereditary.

Easter weekend [Apr. 11th, 2004|08:57 pm]
[Current Music |Brad Paisley - Whiskey Lullaby]

Howdy all. Well, it's Easter, and in an attempt to please both Jesus and the Easter Bunny, my weekend included the following:

On Good Friday, I attended a religious service and/or comedy show in the Cellar of the Union. It was a wonderful experience in many ways, including Jesus advocating the use of both Mentos and Viagra, along with the phrases "YOU'VE BEEN SMOTE, MOTHERFUCKER!" and "Get your res-erection on with Viagra!"

That night I drank at Mike and Maria's. At the Albertsons beforehand, I discovered that Jesus was in fact smiling upon mankind: Mountain Dew: LiveWire is back in production again. When I discovered this, I bought four 2-liter bottles of it, and as I remembered, it's the best thing ever. It mixes supremely well with vanilla rum, and I drank an entire bottle of LiveWire that night.

I signed up for a forums account at SA and it's wonderful. I'm LordSeXXXenb3rg, for all the Goons out there who care. What is everyone else's SA forum name?

Also that night, Mike taught me the basics of Pokemon. I was not as sober as possible by that point, so it was interesting, but I think that now I can at least pretend to understand some of his Pokemon-related posts, instead of just skipping them entirely.

Saturday I hung out at my parent's house and ate dinner there. I also did laundry. Woo! Oh yeah, I almost forgot. There was a special on VH1 called Behind the Scenes of Queer as Folk or some such. It was interesting, and I learned who is and isn't really gay (everyone but Ted and Michael is) along with another thing that I kinda wish they hadn't said. In case you havent seen it yet... ) I've been vary graciously loaned the third season of QaF so as I have time, I'll catch up with the story of our favorite Babylon gays.

That night, I returned to Mike and Maria's to drink more. More LiveWire, more rum. Toys R Us had a board game sale, so they'd purchased a few new titles including Guesstures, which is like charades, but on speed. Maria and I kicked the collective ass of Jon, Mike, and Chuckie, even though they had more team members.

As the Bible clearly commands in Leviticus, I had some really tasty spiral-cut ham with family and friends. Que delicious. I was given a bunch of leftovers, so I'll actually have food in my fridge next to all the LiveWire.

I guess that's about the extent of my Easter weekend. I hope the Easter Bunny had a really good birthday, and that everyone remembered to take a moment of their time to remember that this is his special day. </sarcasm>

School Drama [Apr. 1st, 2004|12:00 am]
[Current Mood | aggravated]
[Current Music |D12 - My Band (4:58)]

Okay, so I already knew that I was in for a longer-than-four-year stint at good ol' UA due to not getting Bs or better in a couple CS classes, and my difficulties in Calc. A shining point of hope was last semester when the department announced that Calc II was no longer an admission requirement, and that Math 215 (Linear Algebra) could be used instead.

"Whee!" said I, "If I take that, then I don't have to fix my D in Calc II!" and to the best of my recollection, the College of Science advisor agreed. So this semester I'm in 2 CS classes that I've already taken, in an attempt to improve the grades and get into the major, along with that Math 215, to take the place of Calc II, and two upper division electives.

During my latest advising meeting, the same girl told me that since I'd taken CalcII at some point it didn't matter what I did afterwards unless I actually redid that class. Bad news. Then she said, "Remember how I said you could take it at Pima and transfer it over to fix the D? Yeah, UA lets you do that, but the CS department doesn't." Bad news. I was told that I'm far enough into the pre major work that unless I fix all the non-A's to A's with maybe a few B's, then I'm not getting in. Bad news. "You should consider your options. Maybe CS isn't the best place for you." Bad news. She actually recommended, with a straight face, that I think about a Math major with CS emphasis. Oh, wait... I suck at math. Guess what? Bad news.

She also suggests what's called an Interdisciplinary Studies Major (IDS) which is basically taking 3 minors that are connected and cramming them together. The CS minor doesn't use the Math 215 class that I'm in, and it's not upper division, so it accomplishes nothing for me. Bad news. The two classes I'm retaking? For the IDS major, I need a GPA of 2.0, which, holy fuck, I already have. So those classes are useless. Bad news. On top of all that shit, IDS is a BA, not a BS, so I need fourth semester proficiency in a foreign language, instead of the second I scraped through. Bad news.

Bad news out of the way now, I think. The original plan was to go with CS, MIS (Management Information Systems), and Poli-Sci, but I think I'm leaning towards CS, MIS, Philosophy. There are some cross overs between philosophy and CS, so it shouldn't be too bad. The advisor also mentioned something that I knew somewhere deep down: All the people from Google have philosophy degrees with their CS backgrounds too. I guess a lot of programming folks do. As of right now, that's the plan. I've got the CS one done, with the exception of one class (382, if anyone plans on taking it later) and I'm going to start signing up for MIS and PHIL classes for next year. Changing this late gives me very full 4th and 5th years, but maybe I'll take some summer school classes or something. I'll have to figure out a schedule in the morning, because I am le tired.

Just in case you care [Mar. 22nd, 2004|09:46 pm]
Slight changes to the front page of the portfolio to make it easier to read/navigate. With the ALT tags properly in use now, even the poor bastards using Lynx can get to the right album. Any other ideas/suggestions are still welcome.

Ah, self promotion... [Mar. 22nd, 2004|12:43 am]
[Current Music |Quiet Riot - Cum On Feel The Noize (3:26)]

Everyone should take a look at this and tell me what I'm doing wrong (or right, if you'd rather). While this version does have a lot of the same pictures, this one is larger than the one I had up awhile back, and prettier as well. My main concerns are that the rollovers work in every browser, and that the main pages aren't too oppressively huge to load. They work in IE, Netscape, and Opera, so I'm pretty well covered, but if one of you Mozilla folks could give it a go, I'd be even more pleased. Same goes for any other non-mainstream nerds.

If you're reading this in the wee hours of March 22nd, wait a bit and go through them in the morning, since upload speeds on a cable modem suck hardcore. 26.3 kbps right now. Woo! I'm thinking about breaking the Europe and camp pages into two parts, just due to their largeness, since FrontPage estimates 150 seconds to load the page on dialup.

In an attempt to be helpful, SSH is uploading the html files last, so if the link is 404ing you, check back later, and it should be up.

Phoenix Trip [Mar. 17th, 2004|12:39 am]
[Current Music |Leaving on A Jetplane]

Aforementioned BNL concert is today. I'm dropping my grandparents off at the airport at 9:30 and then going to my apartment to grab a few supplies, and/or a fresh shave, then back to my house, where I wait for the children to get out of school.

[diss tag]
Did I mention that I'm on Spring Break?
As in not in school?
ka-diss.
[/diss tag]

Anyway, then I go to Casey's and he drives Chuckie and my own bad self up to Tempe, where we meet up with Mike and Maria, who went up slightly earlier, since they too are on Spring Break (see above diss). The concert thingie starts at 3, and it runs until 11. Should be interesting. We also may have to find surrogate "guardians" for the children (including Mike) since the information on it says that it's all ages, under 21 with a parent of guardian. Otherwise Maria and I will have a good time and leave everyone else to suffer (see above diss again).

We're spending Wednesday night up there, and returning at some point Thursday. Should be a learning experience for all. w00t!

St Patty's Day plans? [Mar. 12th, 2004|09:11 am]
How many people would be interested in going to a Barenaked Ladies concert? The tickets look to be around $20 after the convenience charge nonsense, and they're all general admission to the Tempe Beach Park. Never been there, so I dont know what it's like, but really it's BNL so it would be hard to be too awful.

Philosophy papers are, uh.. fun, I guess. [Mar. 10th, 2004|10:28 am]
I present you with my favorite sentence from my term paper: "Invariantists claim that the existence of WAMs presupposes the need for contextualism as a viable viewpoint, in that they allow for the level of conversational familiarity to be brought down to the point where all objections to invariantistic beliefs become null."

It's fun to go through old documents [Mar. 8th, 2004|10:54 pm]
[Current Music |Blue County - Good Little Girls (3:05)]

I found this disclaimer on some notes from my junior year of high school, that I guess I distributed to other people. "These notes brought to you by Chris Cronenberg. They are for entertainment purposes only. Use of these notes with for any purpose other than entertainment exonerates aforementioned author from prosecution for poor grades, bodily harm, elephant stampedes, octopus attacks, or crippling diarrhea users may experience as a result of typos, misquotes, or misunderstandings in these notes. Unauthorized reproduction of any material, description or accounts of these notes without the express written consent of Chris Cronenberg is prohibited and will be aggressively prosecuted."

Hmm let's see what else we have...

I found a holocaust word search. Yes, that's right, a holocaust word search. The subtitle is, "IT'S CLASS PARTICIPATION-RIFIC!" and I've hidden the super-fun words Holocaust, Hitler, Concentrationcamps, Jews, Soviets, Poles, Gypsies, Disabled, Adolf, Extermination, Kristallnacht, Nazi, Antisemitism, Genocide, Masterrace, and Auschwitz.

Oh no... Notes from that fucking awful book Rain of Gold. That's way worse than the Holocaust.

Yay! The script from the 8th grade Final Project in Driscoll! We had such wonderful lines as:
Chris: You only remember that? What's the capital of Kazakhstan?
Kenny: I dunno.
Maria: I know!! Alma-Ata!! (cackle insanely)
Mike: Why do you know that?
Maria: Because I'm insane.

Maria: Remember how everyone in the class got a 0 on the first test day? That was because we didn't use our psychic powers to know that Mr. Driscoll wanted us to circle our score at the top of the page.
Chris: I told you.
Maria: It's not in my notes.
Chris: See? You weren't taking good notes.
Maria: So, we're supposed to take notes on the things you don't say?
Chris: Yes.
(short pause)
Mike: Ok, ok. Everyone think happy thoughts.
Kenny: Like the fan room?
Chris: (smile) Tee hee.

Chris: Anyway, I think we should move on. What did we do next?
Maria: THE AFRICA CONFERENCE! And it was good.
Mike: Foof!
Jenny: Fuzzy bunnies!
Kenny: Meadows!
Maria: Let me guess. Cloned sheep? AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! You are all insane!!!
Kenny: Why do people keep telling me that?

I've decided we need to re-integrate "Foof, fuzzy bunnies, meadows, cloned sheep" into our vernacular.
